Welcome back. Today. I really want to share with you something that really changed my whole outlook on life. What if trauma isn't actually a curse at all? What if it's the opposite? What if it isn't that there's something wrong with you, but actually it's the beginning of your hero's journey? We've all watched films or series or documentaries. The hero always overcomes a challenge and becomes a better person for it at the end and wins. They end up becoming the person that they always knew they were meant to be. By the end.
Speaker 1:We're going to be looking at a three-step framework for seeing your traumas differently and actually knowing what to do if you have some sort of trauma or anxiety or something that keeps stopping you from moving forward towards your goal, because those blocks or feeling like you don't know how to move forward. That's not the end. That energy, that block, can be transformed into something incredible. And if you've ever wondered why me, because I know I ask that question a lot or you feel stuck in shame and guilt or embarrassment, of fear, of judgment, of how people are going to be looking at you, this episode is going to help you step into that hero's journey, to be the hero of your own story and move into becoming that new human that you're meant to be. Maybe you're not meant to follow the rules like everybody else, but you're going to create something that is really deep and meaningful and truly authentic. The truth is, the way trauma works in our brain is that we can sometimes see trauma as final. It's like I can't move forward because the trauma actually stops you and makes you believe that you can't move forward, that you don't have aspirations, that you don't have motivations and that you can't move on from your old life. But you don't know how to move forward and that's just proof that you're damaged in some way. That's really the trauma. Talking there and I hear this all the time is like I can't go back to who I was and I don't know how to move forward or know even what I'm meant to do moving forward. I know I'm meant to do something, but I don't know what it is. But here's the truth that feeling that block isn't the end of the story. It's actually the beginning Knowing that you can't go back. You can't go back to your old version of your life, is lost, it's gone, it's crumbled or it's been taken away. There's some loss there. You've had to let go, and it might be that you've experienced a huge amount of loss in your life. That means this now is the beginning of a new chapter in your life, even though it's incredibly painful.
Speaker 1:Joseph Campbell, the mythologist. He showed us that every great story starts with a rupture, a crisis, a loss of some sort, and the hero gets pulled out of the ordinary world. And now they have this huge challenge, a loss, a wound, and they feel like they're unable to move forward and they had to stop doing what they were doing before. They had to change, and that's why it's so inspiring. It's the transformation that is so inspiring for us, because, deep down, we love watching all those things, because it helps us feel that it's possible for us too.
Speaker 1:Just take a moment right now, take a deep breath in, hold it, take another sip in and then sigh it out. And just take a moment to think and pause. Is there a hero waiting to be freed within you? Are you being invited, because of some loss or crisis, to step into the hero within you? In the same way that trauma pulls us out of who we thought we were, it actually is inviting us to look within us, much deeper within us, to find that spark to help us move forward. Our brain is like a map of what we need to do to allow ourselves to move forward when there is trauma, when there is loss, and we know now through science that ruminating and actually analyzing it over and over again means you will not move forward because you're using a certain part of the brain, so overthinking will make you feel stuck. You're not going to move forward from overthinking.
Speaker 1:Understanding how trauma works is the first and most important thing we need to do is regulate the nervous system, because your body will not allow you to move forward until your nervous system thinks, yes, it's safe to move forward. If you're feeling fear because of the loss that you've experienced and you don't know how to move forward, it's understandable really that we would feel so much fear, and that means we need to learn to regulate our nervous system so that we can get in the right gear if you like to be able to move forward. The second thing we've learned from actually analysing the brain is that we need to have self-awareness, so we need to become aware of the emotions within us and actually process the trauma that's holding you back, because if your nervous system is getting triggered, it could be that the trauma within your brain is triggering the nervous system. So first we need to calm the nervous system so we can get to the trauma. And once we then are able to get to that part of the brain, the amygdala, where some of the trauma is stored, we can then process that and it goes to the hippocampus and we get the learning, the wisdom, from that and we can then learn, if you like, from our mistakes and think how do I want to move forward this time without doing what I've done before? Because the only reason why, if you like, the universe, the creator, god, whatever it is that you believe in is actually creating a loss in your life and inviting you to step into your hero is because you're meant to learn and go beyond that level. Your life isn't to suffer, it's to grow out of and become that hero. So it is an invitation to find the power within you to overcome the outer conditions or scenario.
Speaker 1:I've had so many clients. They've had a job loss and I'm like this is great, because you are meant to be doing something more, and then they end up getting a pay rise and promotions as they move forward because they're out of that toxic environment they used to be in. There's countless of clients who got higher paid jobs and what appeared to be a loss was actually an opportunity. So when you really start stepping into your healing, you're stepping into actually healing the emotions of that loss so you can let go fully. So then you can move forward. Otherwise we're clinging on to the old because of the emotions haven't been processed down. So if we have anxiety or flashbacks or overwhelm, these are like the dragons, if you like. Every hero must face and actually let go or slain those so that we're letting go of the fear around those dragons, etc. And the other thing is, with every hero they never do it alone. You don't get a hero. I mean even marvel. They have all these people helping the heroes actually move forward in trauma healing.
Speaker 1:This is actually really important. Connection is very, very important for our brain health. But you learn how to be in safe relationships and so the brain knows it's safe because I've got that support behind me. Be it therapy, find ways of releasing the trauma, regulating your nervous system and making connections so that you can move forward and really become that hero in your journey. And that's why science meets spirituality. Neuroscience shows us that trauma rewires the nervous system, but not to sabotage you, but to help you keep safe. Your body is trying to say don't move forward, it's not safe, it's not betraying you. So when we can really truly embody this learning, then we can go okay, there's nothing wrong with me. I just need to regulate my nervous system and release the trauma so I can move forward.
Speaker 1:It's practical ways of moving forward so that you can achieve what it is you want and you can release like shame, guilt, sadness, and actually then allow the curiosity, the creativity, the compassion to come through. And that's when you get unstuck and you start moving forward and you are so much more productive. That's another thing that my clients say is I'm so much more productive than I used to be. I'm doing so much more than I used to Because basically, the trauma and the nervous system are like brakes. And the other thing we need to realize is the hero always comes back bearing gifts, something that they've earned through the struggles. They've benefited from it. It's always worth it, but not just for themselves, but for their family, for their community. Like everyone wins in some way. Healing trauma is no different. Everyday survival, just keeping a smile face. It's actually about true transformation within yourself so that you're being authentic.
Speaker 1:Think of it as like a three-step healing part for a hero's journey. First is you have to recognize that, okay, I've lost this and reframe that loss or that trauma, as this is the beginning of a new journey, not the end. And then you have to fear and the power it has over you, so that you can then step into creativity, which will allow you to problem solve. And as you do this, you strengthen your nervous system and your brain to believe, yeah, we're moving through this and we can do this. Then you need to create structures. Structures areructures are so important. Structures help you feel safe, knowing okay, this is what I could do, this, then I've got to do this. And it allows you to stop overthinking and then you can just move through the process and take the actions easily. We want ease. We don't want to be overthinking, overworking. We want to put our effort into the actual action itself and rather than this having to work out what you need to do next. So the next thing, once you've regulated your nervous system, released the trauma, is really looking at where am I heading, what are my goals and what do I need to do to get there and then just, step by step, start taking each step, one at a time, and before you know it, you've done it.
Speaker 1:One of the greatest things about the hero's journey is the compassion and empathy that is built over time, rather than judgment. It's only when you've truly been through something that is like a hero's journey that you have more empathy for another human being, for what they're going through rather, all those other people that will probably be judging you as you're going through the hero's journey. That's why it's so important to get a strong support structure around you that support you through your journey. So if you're listening right now and you're carrying the weight of a great loss or trauma or anxiety, I want you to remember something You're not broken. You're at the beginning of the hero's journey and there's a huge gift waiting for you at the other end, because once you've got through the pain, that pain actually becomes a source of your most deepest strength, resilience, compassion, empathy, love.
Speaker 1:Science is telling us everything is energy, frequency, vibration, and that means everything and anything can be transformed. We know energy can be transformed, and that is your hero's journey's key insight is that if you're feeling pain right now, you can transform that pain, energy into something that is so powerful that it enables you to move forward. You can transform the energy of betrayal, loss, grief into success, prosperity, joy, love, purpose, wisdom, so that fear doesn't hold you captive anymore, because the truth is, when we feel feelings of fear or sadness or loss, it's a prison. It keeps us chained to the past and we can't move forward, no matter how much we try.
